There are several ways to validate if your pool has a leak, and we will go through a couple of them now.

1st is using the leak tester sticker and placing it directly on the pool skimmer surface.  That is the best place to run your test.  You must line up the water level in the pool to the water line on the sticker.  After a 24-hour period, if the water level stays in the aqua (ok) area of the sticker, then you have no leak.  If it goes into the dark blue or leak area of the sticker you can be pretty certain you have a leak.  Please keep in mind, if you’ve had a lot of kids in the pool during the test and they splash water out all day, that could impact your results.  Except for unusual activity or extreme weather conditions, if the water level is below the aqua area marked OK, you have a leak.

You should turn the pump off before you apply the sticker.  The leak detection test will require you to have the pump running all night, so after you apply the sticker turn the pump back on.  The reason for this is, there can always be a leak in a return line or jet line.  The pump should be on in order to determine a leak in those areas.

water bucket test2nd is a simple bucket test.  This should be done to confirm exactly how much evaporation your pool had in a 24-hour period. Excessive heat and strong winds can have a big impact on evaporation.  While the typical evaporation rate is 1/8” in 24 hours, these weather elements can greatly impact the evaporation levels.

We recommend doing a bucket test, so you know what your evaporation levels are before you make any wrong assumptions.  A water bucket test measures your pool level change against evaporation and water level change, in the bucket over a 24-hour period.  To learn more, visit our website and navigate to the bucket test button page at www.poolleaktester.com
